NAESP Statement on the FCC’s Inclusion of Wi-Fi Hotspots in E-Rate Program

NAESP applauds the Federal Communications Commission's approval of new rules to allow schools and hotspots to use E-Rate funds to provide Wi-Fi hotspots to those without home internet connections.

“We applaud the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) approval of new rules to allow schools and libraries to use E-Rate funds to provide Wi-Fi hotspots to those without home internet connections,” said NAESP Executive Director L. Earl Franks, Ed.D., CAE. “This important modernization of the E-Rate represents a significant expansion of internet access to students that is entirely consistent with the purpose of the program. As a result of this change, more students will be able to access the internet to help with their schoolwork. We thank the FCC commissioners for today’s action and especially commend the leadership of chair Jessica Rosenworcel for her ongoing efforts to help close the ‘Homework Gap.’ “
